William Hoyt Philpot was born to Jack T. and Alice Philpot on September 19, 1909, in Haralson County, Georgia. He was the fourth of their eight children, having five brothers and two sisters. He was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 1, 2007, at the age of 97.
Hoyt grew up on a farm where hard work taught him responsibility. He received his early education at Flatwoods School and graduated from Buchanan High School in 1929. Soon after graduation Hoyt followed his brother, Stanley, north where they found employment with the Illinois Central Railroad. Many of his years with the railroad were spent traveling from New Orleans to Chicago and Omaha as a traveling inspector. He also was a pipefitter, a steamfitter, a welder and a diesel mechanic before he retired after 44 years of service. It was during his time with the Illinois Central that he met and married his wife, Betty, and four years later became a father when their son Jack was born. After retiring from the railroad, Hoyt went to work for School District 205 where he worked his way up to Assistant Building Superintendent working at Thornton Township, Thornridge and Thornwood High Schools which are located in the south suburbs of Chicago. He retired from that position in 1973 after 15 years.
Upon retirement, Hoyt and Betty moved to Buchanan and later to Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, Florida, where they became active with the Gulf Breeze senior citizens group. At age 70, after colon cancer surgery, he began exercising to strengthen his heart by walking. This led to running and in 1983, he began to compete in 10K races. He built many lasting relationships through his involvement as a member of the Pensacola Runners Association. One room in Hoyt's house is dedicated to displaying the ribbons and awards he received. He retired from running but not from exercising at the age of 94.
After the death of Betty in 1996, Hoyt moved back to Buchanan were he was a member of Tallapoosa East Baptist Church. He enjoyed the Wednesday evening dinner and Bible study. He also enjoyed attending the Senior Friends meetings.
Besides his wife, Betty, Hooyt was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Stanley, Horace, Calvin and MacAllen and a sister, Ruby Bowman.
Hoyt leaves to cherish his memory his son, Jack; daughter in law, Nancy; granddaughters, Brenda & Heather; sister, Ines Holllifield; sister in law, Irlene Philpot and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. Because of his kind, friendly, and generous spirit, Hoyt also leaves many friends to reflect on his long and active life.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, April 5, 2007 between the hours of 3& 8 pm.
Services will be conducted Friday, April 6, 2007 at 11 AM from The Chapel of Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen with Dr. Thomas Ward officiating and Mr. Bud Jones providing Eulogy. Music will be provided by Bud & Jackie Jones and Joanie Boalch. Wiley Bowman, Steve Norton, Johnny Hollifield, Roy Philpot, Phil Bowman and Bobby Boalch will serve as pallbearers.
Interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
